Snow. Yes.

After being in the eye of the storm all day yesterday, by this morning we were right in the middle of it. It was snowing when I woke up. Is still 36 degrees, though the sun just came out. Clouds are distilling overhead ("showers reveloping by afternoon," say the weathercritters). The mountains are dazzling. Nearly two feet of snow in the Catalinas, snow levels (as in snow-that-sticks) down to just above us (3500 feet to our 3300), and everything here is glittering as the sun hits it.

We haven't seen anything like this in almost a year. .6 inches in the gauge so far. The back corral is flooded but not too badly; the stalls are damp but not awash. Horses are still in their blankets--all dry underneath. Keed has rolled and is solid mud from end to end, ears included.

No lessons this morning. The arena with its sandy clay is too slippery, even if we could rely on the rain not to come back while we were saddling up. Ephiny trotted out for breakfast with the most beautiful floating gait: skimming the ground, perfectly balanced.

Yesterday was a writing day (and a ranty day, but that one's been coming for a long time, so now it's out of my system and you are all lovely for sympathizing). Today will be, too. It's rather a guilty feeling: I'm not doing anything else! I'm playing! ... er ... right. They pay me for this.

There will be much to do this week. Keed and Gaudia are supposed to move to Teacher's (50 miles away) tomorrow. Gaudia belongs to Teacher. Keed is going off to college. Teacher is leasing him and plans to make him a Dressage Star. Then Tuesday and Wednesday, [livejournal.com profile] smoemeth will be in town and there will be great rejoicing. Also, the parental units promise, a good roast. Thursday we shall have lessons. And then there will be a weekend, and a go-thud day in there somewhere.

In the meantime, rain. And snow. Yes.

Rain was a bust here, sigh, but I'm glad you got some. And got some good writing time in. Question: how do the horses let you know they want blankies?

I'm sorry your rain was a bust. We've had a lot of that. I was a bit surprised to get significant rain this weekend actually.

Still in this town but farther up the slope, they picked up 3 inches of snow this morning. Our few flakes were the trailing edge of this.

Horses indicate they want blankies by running around madly as the temperature drops (Pook and Ephiny, both of whom will stand on their hindlegs among other delights), or by leaving their dinner when I come in with the blanket and presenting their shoulder to me so I can swing the blanket over (big deal, leaving dinner and all), or in Pandora's case (since she doesn't like to be blanketed) by not going to the far end of her corral and trying to get away when I come toward her with blanket. Then when it goes on, you can see them relax. They don't like being cold.

Ahhh. Like my nandogs who creep into my sweater if the room is chill. And when I go to sleep, I have to be careful not to flop down, because I might sqaush a dog-round curled up beneath the coverlet.

I can't figure out why mine don't want blankets under the same conditions yours want 'em? Even incold rain and the wind howling so that they get wet under their shelters. And have shed most of their winter coats too. Pooka's kid is the least perturbed of them all. They did choose to stay under the shelters during the mixed precip and later hail. Last year when we got all of that early record-breaking rain before they had much coat was a different story--except for Twix who still never wanted cover.

hmmm. INTERESTING. My Ayrab girl is always the first to need a blanky! The first couple of rainstorms after the weather cools in the fall nearly kill her, she says. We are Mean, she says, for not presaging the storms, and making her wait for her blanky. Mind you, after that, she does Just. Fine. because she is Tough. ;).

My friends down in Tombstone said they got quite a bit of snow. Not surprising; Tombstone's elevation is around 4500 feet.

Stay warm!

Ooo yeah. They must have got enough to shovel.

It's over 50 degrees now--with sun, not bad at all.

No snow here, but intermittant rain through the night. Dry enough ths morning to attempt laundry, actually.

It was ever so good of Janni to do her cookie booth and break the drought, wasn't it?

I keep hoping she'll do another, but this alas was apparently the last of the season for her troop.

It's really strange seeing Phoenix ringed in snow-capped mountains. With the fabulously clear air today, it's quite a view.

I'll bet. The mountains look like the Alps here--we haven't seen that in a while.

I understand we got snow here. I was working and didn't notice. Been without Internet acess for about a week. More in my LJ as soon as I get to it. (probably tomorrow)

Had to take a fast peek here to be sure all was well with you guyz.

Still tired. Off to bed I go. It is almost 7:30. Argh.
