Lipizzans are mostly gray, which means they start out dark and turn white as they grow up; some faster, some slower. About 1 in 500 or so stays dark -- bay, seal brown, or black. The School always keeps a dark stallion in training, for luck, they say. Charlie Horse Acres in Graham Washington has a gorgeous bay mare. We know that Pooka's sire is heterozygous for gray, meaning that there's a 50-50 chance, when breeding him to a non-gray mare, of getting a non-gray baby. (The graying gene is dominant.)

Tia is a gray; she'll turn white as she matures. You can tell even when they're babies, because the grays have white around their eyes when they're born.
