Along with the fact that I'm from 1965, am Sam from "Stargate," and my inner child is 10, here's one from [livejournal.com profile] sartorias via [livejournal.com profile] janni:

Ten Things I've Done That Others on My Flist Might Not Have

1. Had tea with Prince Philip in a Cambridge college garden.

2. Flown a glider.

3. Sold six novels at once--as my first fiction sale.

4. Stayed in a youth hostel near Hadrian's Wall.

5. Spent a day riding a dozen Lipizzan and Andalusian stallions from one of the traveling shows.

6. Bred, foaled out, raised, and trained my own Lipizzan stallion.

7. Ridden the levade--voluntarily, on a trained horse.

8. Been one of two "spectators" at an international conference on Gregorian chant.

9. Frequently wear a 2300-year-old coin as a pendant.

10. Spent an afternoon with all the illuminated manuscripts from the Newnham College library.
10a. Held in my hands the original ms. of the Cambridge Songs (oak-gall censorship and all).

Awe inspired by number 3---truely amazing.
Totally envious of 10 and 10a; OMG---I'm a book geek, time to get a MLIS. ;)

Book geekage is the best. I've been in the British Library and the Beinecke, too, looking at medievalia.

Have also had tutorials in medieval lyric in which the tutor played and sang for us. And attended a midnight performance of the Harrowing of Hell from Piers Ploughman, in a medieval chapel in Cambridge.

I wonder what inspires book-geekage... comparatively with the species books have only been around as a media form for a short period of time. Wonder if it's Vogler-related in inspiration source?
-=Jeff=- <---instant Homer Simpson just add old book smell..mmmm yellowed paper.

Master's of Library/Information Sciences?

Don't bother. It isn't about books any more, it's about computers and electronic retrieval systems and other such crap.

(currently enrolled, and wondering why)

No doubt, and I agree unfortunately it seems that anything with tenure, retirement or federal/state seems to want those 4 little letters by your name.

True. And the ALA has a monopoly on decent library jobs, it seems like. But you might be interested in this page, which was posted as part of a class website:

http://web.utk.edu/~eperez3/IS520/extra/organizers-wanted.htm

That one (unfortunately already filled!) job for "(Telecommute) Researcher / librarian in Computer/Internet industry," or one just like it in almost any field, is the job I really, really crave.

I'm reading all these lists and realizing that other writers I know have led much more interesting lives than I have.

Not really. Just different. My life to me seems rather dull, or rather over-focused.

Nobody trumps [livejournal.com profile] sartorias, I have to say. What a life!

We've got our two thousand year old coins hidden.

All these are seriously cool, but what is a levade?

That's the one where the horse sits down and raises his forehand--the equestrian-statue pose. Ask for a piaffe, ask for more forward but don't let him go forward, his front end leaves the ground.

Have also, not voluntarily, ridden Lipizzans in courbette (the scary stand straight up and jump one) and capriole (leap into the air and kicklikehell). Fell off in the courbette, but that was equipment failure--the grab strap broke off the saddle at the top of the leap, and I went over sideways. (I was on the longeline at the time, being sacrificial body while the trainer had a Discussion with the horse.)

Wowowowow!

Watching the muscle control of the rider and the horse during those performances is so fascinating. Some day I hope to get closer.

If Pook and I ever get out of the baby-green phase, you can come and watch. :)

It's a real exercise in balance in motion--and every time I think I've found all the available muscles, we find a new one.

It's the coin pendant that I'm really envious of. :) Too bad I didn't foal out my Lipizzan....gelding.

You could get an antique coin at one of the auctions or off ebay, and have Willow set it for you. 8)
