I confess surprise at the amount of what I would call outright horror on that list, although they may have reclassified it all as dark fantasy and I am simply behind in my terminology. Again.

Darn. I missed this anthology, thought at first it might be Classical Horses in Horse Fantastic, which is one of my favorites. Has "Death..." been published elsewhere besides Horses?

Yet another post....

I don't know much about many of these stories, but to be competing against the Nine Billion Names of God, and Deathbird Stories.....wow!

Wow, congratulations!

Of course, Classical Horses should have been on there too. Fortunately, they have space for write-ins at the end. :)

There's some mighty fine company to be in, there!

And some oddies...seems a lot of horror, and where is the likes of "Leaf by Niggle"?

What a lovely compliment! Is the story anywhere we can find it quickly--was Classical Horses a book a library might have picked up?

And is 9 billion names of god SF or fantasy? %^)
It's one of my favorites--

There's room for write-ins, so you can always do that.

"Death and the Lady" was in After the King (the Tolkien Centennial anthology) and then Gardner put it in his Masterpieces collection. Which is probably how it got onto this list.

"Classical Horses" was in Horsefantastic and then in some reprint antho or other.

It was in After the King. No horses in it except as transportation.

It still earns me a royalty twice a year--not a lot, but a nice little chunk.

Yes, that was weird. I'd cut out the horror and make it its own list, myself.

Thenkyew. Thenkyewall. It won't make the top five, not nearly, but it's great to be on the list at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if it got on there due to After the King, actually. I think Pratchett's Troll Bridge (also on the list) is in After the King as well.

A look through my stack of anthologies shows that Classical Horses appear in Horse Fantastic (from DAW, edited by Greenberg & Greenberg) and Horses! (from Ace, edited by Dann & Dozois).

Some real old favorites on there. Fine company, indeed.

I wrote in Classical Horses as my #1. Glad they had a write-in!
