I signed the petition, and I'm tempted to send one personally to each Democrat, along with the story of my mother's best friend. In 1967, she had her 16th pregnancy. She aborted it herself, using a card wire. Her 12-year-old daughter had to clean up the mess because her mother passed out from the blood loss.
It's what poor women will end up doing under Stupak: clean up the mess and hope to God there's no infection afterwards.
I have one of those stories about a cousin. In her case, as is often the case when something catastrophic goes wrong, it is/was detectable at the very end of the second semester. She could not get an abortion in three states, despite it being legal, despite her father being a respected surgeon. She ended up carrying a desperately deformed and dying fetus to term, where it died either right before delivery or during delivery. I never had the nerve to ask which...she did not lose her life, but it was their only attempt for a boy, and she never conceived again.
Those are the people who will be crushed by the abortion option if this allows private insurance to drop it. Second and third semester abortions are horribly expensive -- and if forced to bring those...well, I can go on about this, as I have in my own LJ. I signed and tweeted on this...and am seriously thinking about sending or hand-delivering a real hanger to my current rep -- a republican who will probably be offended, but I'm certainly offended by the Catholic Church lobbying about whether I can get a medical abortion. So he can stand being a little offended.
