Clash of the Titans
Feb. 20th, 2006 07:34 pmAnd now we wait for the vet to email with instructions.
Capria and Pandora got into it Big Time (major mare fight--kicking blue hell out of each other) just as I was getting ready to feed dinner. Capria lost. Leg laid open on the outside hind cannon, bleeding like crazy. I got it cleaned and wrapped. It's not a location that can be stitched, so this is going to be fun.
Pandora is in deep doo-doo tonight. She cow-kicked me while having her back foot cleaned before a ride, caught me sideways and did a number on the muscles of shoulder and neck. I nailed her for it. Probably her fight with Capria was payback. I managed to ride her, too, and while the walk was not pleasant because of the way the muscles are torn (riding position is exactly wrong for that), the trot was very nice indeed.
Ibuprofen is working. Heating pad next. Bandage check on Capria after that, plus whatever the vet wants done.
Some days it isn't worth getting out of bed.
ETA Vet emailed promptly--she's fine for the night and he'll take a look at her tomorrow.
Ah, Capria. She can't get through a winter without a vet bill. She just can't bring herself to do it.

Date: 2006-02-20 07:48 pm (UTC)I guess she isn't safe with the other mares, or Pooks either. Or do you think that Capria instigated it?
What does the vet say about -your- bruises? Don't forget Castor Oil for them. It really works to ease things. (Rub it on, don't drink it)

Have help coming?

Date: 2006-02-20 08:01 pm (UTC)And sympathies on the damage Pandora did to you, too!
How well do horses cope with having their legs cleaned/wrapped, when injured like that? Is it a trust-of-their-human issue, like it sounds like it might be? (Because otherwise, I could imagine it being a dangerous business!)

Date: 2006-02-20 08:26 pm (UTC)I'm going to remind you that you MUST take care of yourself. If you get too beat up you won't be able to take care of the herd, and then what?
Also: cold pack your muscles. Heat feels good but cold helps heal inflammation. My doc's standard prescription is 20 minutes of cold, 20 minutes of heat (if I want), 20 minutes of nothing, then repeat.

Date: 2006-02-21 01:11 am (UTC)Poor Capria. That's gotta hurt! And it's worrisome when things happen to their legs. I'll keep a positive thought and prayers.
And for YOU, as well. Sounds like you have taken a beating. Ai!! Yi!! I've had crisis-mode going on for the past two weeks (going to doctor, taking Mama for routine test that came out OK but which made her sickly for about a week, fixing house when it broke, realizing I had to do something about a neighbor . . . various stuff) and it's very tiring. My blood sugars over the past three months were eeevil (I got in trouble with the doctor this very morning over that and got put on a different drug schedule . . . but what I need to do is clean up the emotional eating and go back on strict meal plan AND EXERCISE). Your health is the first priority, because without your body . . . um, you can't ride horses or type. Important stuff.
Get yourself checked if the pain continues (and what is this about a concussion?!) The planets must be in conjunction or something.

Date: 2006-02-21 09:40 am (UTC)A.men. After the farrier was done pulling winter shoes at our place Friday, I turned Joy out in the sacrifice area with our coming two year old. My farrier and I were chatting, when Joy reached over for NO apparent reason and bit the filly (JJ). My farrier's comment was "meanie!" ;).
this icon is for you and the girlz...
Date: 2006-02-21 09:44 am (UTC)Not. Fun. Stop.
Be. careful. stop.
tell Pandora to shape up. stop.
tell Capria the Von Munchausen's is highly over-rated as psychological disorders go. Stop.
and gentle {{hugs}} and {{healing vibes}}. stop.
Time to sell more books, huh?
Aren't horses fun? (Did I mention Juno tore her eyelid last weekend? So of course, vet bill + weekend call fee... *whee*). so also {{empathy}}.
and bandaging vibes, because holy cow with the work.... Do you have someone who can lend a hand? because I somehow do NOT see bandaging once or twice a day with torn shoulder muscles as fun. or even particularly healthy....
Keep us posted!

Date: 2006-02-21 12:11 pm (UTC)Pandora was having a Hindleg-Handling Issue when she clocked me, but keed and Capria were right outside the fence bugging her and it looks as if she was trying to get onto all fours and get away from them and forgot where I was. All those years in the pasture caused her to lose some of her people socialization, and she's a bit inclined not to pay close enough attention to how little and squishy humans are. I'm usually very aware of that, but let myself get distracted and then Wham!
