[livejournal.com profile] jonquil asked, I answer:

These are the Usual Suspects, aka the Troops, with a few additions:

Pluto Carrma III aka Pooka, da Pook, der Studmuffin...you get the drift. 1997 Lipizzan stallion (Pluto Gloria II-1 x Carrma). Bought in utero from Charlie Horse Acres in Graham, WA.

Carrma, the Mother of Nations. 1987 Lipizzan mare (Maestoso Africa-68 x Canissa). Mother of Pooka. Bought (with Pook on board) from Charlie Horse per above. Broodmare. Can be ridden but mostly looks after the kids.

Capria, my first Lipizzan. 1988 Lipizzan mare (Favory Cremona x Amelinda). Schoolmaster mare--knows it all, indulges my eccentricities and incapacities. Trained to low third level at one time, comfortable at second if I ride her right. Very patient. Teaches wonderful lessons.

DHF Khepera aka ze keed, der FlederMoose, Dr. Evil, the Evil Gelding, et mult. al. 1995 Arabian/Lipizzan gelding (Shalimar Jordie x Capria). Capria's kid. My first "offspring" and the one who corrupted me into wanting a stallion and wanting to breed Lipizzans. Mostly he's my trail bud. Trainer Joni is putting dressage miles on him for fun and mutual profit.

Camilla aka the War Mare. 1999 Lipizzan mare (Pluto Gloria II-1 x Carrma). Full sister to Pooka. Built like a Mack truck (she throws back to the old Maestoso--massive, imposing horses--and moves like a big Warmblood). Definitely not the kid's pony she impersonates with her curly mane and adorable face. Grows to 18 hands or more when switched to On position. Just started under saddle.

And the Girlz (usually accompanied by Camilla):

Gloriosa II aka Ephiny, nicknamed after an Amazon from Xena. 2002 Lipizzan filly (Favory II Bonasera III x Gabriella II). My big (15.1hh at 2) black (going grey) girl. Also known as Bride of Pooka--her daddy's first daughter in seven years, and bred to be a broodmare for the farm. She'll be ridden as her schedule allows. She'll be bred for the first time probably in '07.

Gaudia, aka the Pookette and Pooklet Prime. 2003 Lipizzan filly (Pluto Carrma III x Gabriella II). Pooka's firstborn. Sale baby--payments are being made on her. Meanwhile she stays here and learns the powers of Evil from her Aunt Camilla and her big sis Ephiny and the Master of All Evil, ze keed.

And not on the farm but a frequent player in the drama:

Twilight Ablaze aka Twix. 2004 Lipizzan/Arabian filly, owned by [livejournal.com profile] lynnesite(Pluto Carrma III x Rem-Member Me). Twix lives in California but is definitely family.

And that's the Usual Suspects at DHF.

Thank you! I hadn't realized ze Keed was a gelding; I was wondering how you managed to keep two stallions.

You're welcome. Keed is definitely not a stallion. He's a partbred, point one, and point two, he was a nasty stallion. He's a lovely, if Evil gelding.

Now Pook...Pook gets to keep the optional equipment. He's perfectly in accordance with the farm's Perfect Pooka Policy(tm).

Pardon my ignorant question, but why is ze keed (DHF Khepera) the only one with DHF in his name?

I have a lot to learn about horses and horse breeding yet... I've learned so much just by reading your LJ!

Why, thenkyew.

Ze keed is named according to Arabian naming conventions, with farm prefix and name (they don't allow duplication of names and this is one way around it).

The rest are named by Lipizzan breed rules, which in the US are the rules of the Austrian State Stud at Piber. There are complicated variations of Roman and Arabic numerals for duplicates and triplicates (both Pook and Camilla are III's, Ephiny and Gabriella are II's, and so on). The basic rule is, boys get the stallion-line name (name of original sire from the 18th or early 19th century) plus the dam's name. Pluto Carrma. Favory Cremona. Neapolitano Slatana. In short, a boy's name is his pedigree. Partbreds can't do this which is why keed is not named this way. Girls have to have an Italianate or Spanishoid name of no more than 12 letters or spaces, ending in -A. We are exhorted to remember that their sons will carry this name, so Be Reasonable. An exhortation caused by, e.g., Neapolitano Muffin, Pluto Barbi, Pluto Gladys, Pluto Dixie....

Neapolitano Muffin sounds like a particularly unfortunate attempt at dessert.

And another lurker creeps forth to say how much she appreciates the annotated cast list and further explication on the Lipp breed rules nomenclature! I'd been trying, lately, to work this out, based on what you say on the website plus reading some of the Lipp-links plus reading about [livejournal.com profile] connerybeagle 's Big White Neighbor on their mom's website. But could you answer a couple of other questions?

-- Does this mean that Pook has two full male!eldersibs who are P.C.s I and II, or was there some other earlier mare also named Carrma (I read about the mare lines or dynasties or whatever they call them, but none of the links I followed seemed to actually list the names for the matriarchs)

-- Who is/was Gabriella when she's not a II in a pedigree?

Oh, and a third question: can I 'friend' you? I'm a reasonably harmless bookaholic and former horse-crazy-little-girl old enough to have seen "Misty" the summer it came out and I quite enjoy reading about real life horses like your crew and Duncan and that yellow-peril illusory critter over in Texas when I come across them on LJ or sffnet
:-)

Oh - and you mentioned "complicated arrangments of Roman and Arabic numerals" -- is that why Carrma's sire was Maestoso Africa-68 and not Maestoso Africa-LXVIII, frex?

There really is a Favory Grapa. Also a Maestoso Erotica.

Gotta be careful naming those fillies.

Yep. Pluto Carrma died in a freak accident at the age of 3. Pluto Carrma II is a gelding somewhere in the PNW. Pook is number three.

Gabriella is a high-rated mare owned by Charlie Horse Acres in Graham, WA. I had her on lease for two years. (Leases are how breeders spread the wealth without actually relinquishing ownership of the stock. Lessee keeps the horse, usually, and the foals belong to the lessee, though trades may be made and some foals revert to lessor.)

Welcome to the crew! And thanks for asking. Yes, you may read my lj. :)

Oy. I said complicated.

Maestoso Africa-68 is a Piber studbook designation--he was out of the mare 68 Africa (Piber references its mares with numbers, though why or how or wherefore, I have no idea).

I can't even begin to understand how Hungarian and Lipican studbook codes work--they produce horses like Siglavy XI-7, who is the son of something like Siglavy XVIII-2, and I have no clue what the numerals mean. And the mares have line names like that instead of name-names. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] shira knows?

Pooka's dad is Pluto Gloria II-1 because he's the first Pluto son of the mare Gloria II. If Gaudia had been a boy, her name would have been Pluto III Gabriella II-1. (Pooka's III migrates leftward, Gabriella's II stays put, and her kids get Arabic numerals instead of Roman ones because she already has a Roman numeral in her registered name. All Pooka's boy kids will be Pluto III Marename.)(I told you it was complicated.)

My only regret for Ephiny as girl is that she just missed being a poker hand: Favory II Gabriella II-2. She is Gloriosa II, but that's because there's another Gloriosa in the registry. So, her first pooka (versus pookette) will be Pluto III Gloriosa II-1.

Aren't you glad you asked?
