Your horses sound like our German Shepherd Dog. These working breeds definitely need jobs -- and if we silly humans don't provide them, they will invent them, much to our dismay.

Oka (pictured) is currently working on Herding Cats (although the cats have a different opinion: Teaching The Dog Manners) and Rodent Border Patrol. The vegetable garden, orchard, and vineyard are fenced to keep him and the deer out, so the gophers are safe, so far. But he caught a rat last week and killed it with one bite. He would love the assignment of Jumping On The Laser Pointer Spot, and will do it for hours, but that's only a special treat.

Yep, you summed it up. My Corgis do OK with rabbit patrol in the yard--the old one is pretty well over it, he shuffles around in a cheerful fog, so we can consider him retired.

The horses, however, get seriously out of sorts if they don't get worked early and often.
