At last--the puter has device drivers again. It took an afternoon of trying everything, followed by resort to Support Chat. And so we entered the future.

Dell Remote. Where this nice young man in India comes in and, while you watch (you can stop him at any time, and you can see everything he does), fixes your system. It took an hour, because one of the main drivers that wasn't there was the DVD driver. Couldn't install anything off the drive. Wireless card, modem, ethernet port, were all missing. Which explains why I couldn't connect at all. But for some reason I could use the external wireless card, which is a good thing.

I'm on the internal now, and everything seems to be working. Which calls for dinner and then, I think, a nice old-fashioned fit of the vapours. And, you know, some writing. Because I have to do that.

Holy cow! Good for Dell Remote!

How could it install XP from the cd drive, and then delete the drivers? I am boggled. And all the device drivers. Joy! I'm really glad he was able to get in through the wireless card to fix everything.

Dinner, yes, and bon bons.

The remote desktop thing is great. I use it at work all the time.

Re: the problems with modern technology. I was at a motel waving my laptop around to try to find a strong enough wireless signal, and was thinking that this didn't show up in any of the old SF novels about Wonders of the Future. If anything, it's more like The Jetsons.
