Beta Testing

Wow, what a response! I'm touched and delighted (and quite excited) by the amount of positive feedback I've had on my brainstorming ideas.

Now, however, it's time to take this thing into real time. I got socked with a huge bill today that I was totally not expecting, and let us just say that publishers take their sweet time paying and at this time of year in particular, We Are Not Having Fun.

Those writing mentorships would make great gifts. Really. I take PayPal. Email to set it up; my email is in my User Info. Put "Mentoring" in the subject line and I'll check the spam file regularly justincase.

Also I have another idea for raising the money, for which see below.

But first, I would like to beta-test both Option A (Horse Camp for Writers) and Option B (Lipizzan Weekend) within the next two months. Email to sign up. Details behind the cut.

Option A can be the larger group. I am thinking a maximum of 6 for the beta test (aiming for 8 when we go public)--2 on-site "boarders," 4 "day campers" who are either local or stay in nearby hotels. The rate per person for the real thing will be $350 for three days for boarders and $250 for day campers. Both rates will include meals (the justly famous DHF Clinic Buffet in all its glory), classes, horse time, educational materials, and selected field trips. Lesson with Teacher will be $40 extra--mainly because I only have one lesson horse and she can only do two lessons in a day, so everyone else will have to audit and take notes (and heckle). I'm getting Pandora ready to join the roster (she is ideal, with her size--Capria can't carry more than 200lbs unless the rider is very balanced) but she needs a little more de-rustifying first.

At any rate, for the beta test, we'll take $100 off the rate ($250/150) in return for helping to develop a curriculum that really works. Among other things, you will help me put together a manual for future horse campers, of which you will all receive a copy, of course. $100 deposit secures you a slot. Dates to be determined. I'm thinking in the region of February 15th-22nd, after Gem Show (so there will be hotel rooms available). There should be horse shows to take a field trip to in that period, and if we take it out far enough, there's the Rodeo.

Option B, the Lipizzan Weekend, will be limited to 3 participants per session, all of whom will stay on the farm. Reduced rate of $300 for the beta test gets you three days on the farm with meals, airport pickup and delivery unless you elect to drive in, educational sessions about the Lipizzan, assisting with training and handling of the herd, a copy of the ongoing "Lipizzan Q&A," and a lesson taught SRS-style by Teacher, on, of course, a Lipizzan--and we'll give you a picture to prove it. If you want your lesson videotaped, we can arrange that. This is open as to date--you book it, we do it. Open weekends would be at the beginning and end of February and any time in March. We can do two or more of these if we have a lot of interest, and I am open to arranging your three days during the week if that's what you need. Again, $100 per person secures you a slot. This would be a very good mini-vacation at less than half the cost of the same amount of time at a resort at that time of year, and we can have as many or as few activities as you like. If you want to spend the whole time under the Party Tree sketching Lipizzans, we can live with that. :)

The weather in Tucson in February and March is about as good as it gets. We could have winter rains, but in general it's clear and sunny with temps ranging from 60 to 80F in the day and in the 40s and 50s at night, with an occasional tip into the 30s. This year we're in drought so the wildflowers may not be much, but you never know--and there's beautiful desert scenery no matter what. By late March we should be getting into cactus-flower season, which is lovely in its own right. There's no better time to escape winter, and with this you get hot and cold running Lipizzans. :)

(Should add that if you are allergic to cats or dogs, you'll want to take the day-camper version of Option A.)

And finally, I'm offering a great set of holiday gifts: copies of various Judith Tarr titles that have either gone out of print or are no longer easily available. Email with requests. All copies will be signed. If you want me to inscribe them to anyone in particular, specify in your email. Details, again, behind the cut. Special features: ALAMUT hardcover, $35 shipped (also available in trade paper and mass market for lower prices), DAGGER AND THE CROSS ditto. The second is the sequel to the first, and they're both prequels to "The Hound and the Falcon"--if you read and loved those, you have to have these. Sale price $60 for the set. They come with beautiful Tom Canty covers. Also featured: ARS MAGICA mass market, $15 shipped. And while I cannot guarantee it, I may be able to offer A WIND IN CAIRO mass market--though that is very, very, very rare and it's a case of make me an offer and I'll see if I can find you a copy. Additional titles also available ($35 hc, $25tp, $15 mm); quantities may be limited. If you have a request, let me know. If you haven't read anything by me before but would like to try, email with the sort of thing you or your gift-ee like and I'll choose one or two for you (two for $60hc, $40tp, $20mm--shipping included in all prices).

Happy Holiday Hysteria!

I know you already have your author/farm pages, but if you need any help setting up (and hosting) a web presence for all this, just let me know.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's talk next week, how's that?

[identity profile] smoemeth.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a plan. :)

[identity profile] raithen.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
the book idea is also fantastic!

(and the two Lady of the Horses prequel/sequelly type books - haven't read 'em - what do you have? Email ploewen @ gmail. )

[identity profile] raithen.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
also, yes, me and titles? somewhat horridly awful.... Sorry....

P.

[identity profile] rethought.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to seem to gushy, but I remember scouring all the used booksellers in three states to find the no longer in print books back in the day. (I also had to find another copy of The Dagger and the Cross for the library, I spilled cough syrup on their copy!)

I'll take Alamut and the Dagger and the Cross for the $60. Also, The Hound and the Falcon, if you can put hands on a copy. Just let me know a price.

Yay for your books. :)

[identity profile] rethought.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Doh. Forgot to say...I can PayPal the money (in USD, even!) to you, if that suits.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wooot!

Do you want the Orb Hound&Falcon? Say $25 for that? It's an omnibus in trade paper. I have a few of those left. If you want a hardcover Golden Horn or Hounds of God, they're majorly rare so, $50 each. Isle of Glass is long gone. :(

Email your mailing address and we can take it from there. I'm capriole at smoe dot org.

We are very happy, say the Lipizzans who love to eat, oh yes.

Horse Camp for Writers. As an aspiring writer who desperately misses her horses, what a neat idea!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thenkyew. I'm sorry your horses are far away. :(

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Depending on how events fall out I'd be up for either--horse camp to learn, as I don't think my arthritis (exponentially worse since menopause hit) would let me ride.

But you'll probably fill up before I know what's going on, so just keep me in mind for another session, if that happens. I think your prices extremely reasonable for what one is getting.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I can put you on the list as a tentative--I can keep you informed as to dates and such, how's that?

Thanks re. prices. People seem to agree, and it feels right. I may go up a bit after a year or so, depending on what the food and extras cost, but for now I'll keep things as posted. This is a work in progress--we'll find what works and then progress. ;>

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds, excellent, thanks.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome.

[identity profile] raithen.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously, in terms of pricing, I think a business plan would be a useful think - I'd hate like hell to see you LOSE money on this enterprise!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I do have one advantage going in: I've been doing this for years, gratis--running clinics and gatherings and hosting horse-mad friends. The format of meals and events has been tried and tested over a long period, and I know what food tends to cost and how to lay a spread for cheap (one word: Costco ;> ). What's new is me charging for it. Usually I host it and Teacher gets paid to teach.

The Lipp weekends are pricier because there are fewer people (necessarily with the facilities) and the lesson is included. They'll go to $450 each once the beta period is over. With hotel rooms running $200 a night and that doesn't include food, and guest ranches charging my three-day rate for a single day, I figure I'm offering a bargain. 8)

That being said, I would love expert input on how to draft a business plan.

[identity profile] raithen.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*that* I can definitely help with ;).

[identity profile] casacorona.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You might be very surprised indeed at what your arthritis will let you do once you've been in Arizona for a day.

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish--but dry doesn't do well with my body at all. But for three days, I can hack it!

[identity profile] kristine-smith.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered ads in pro writers magazines for the various genre organizations--RWA, Mystery Writers, SFWA, whatever the titles are?

Do you mind us mentioning this in SFFNet and other areas?

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, pass it on! Thanks.

Ads I can't afford right now, but after the beta period, if things go well, that's an excellent idea. :)

[identity profile] cindershadow.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
. . . and in addition to advertising in the writers' magazines, you've no doubt already thought about ads in Chronicle of the Horse, Equus magazine, etc. I don't know the rates, but both these have both "normal" want-ads (which include vacation offers) and, of course, larger ads. If the larger ones weren't too pricey, I'd think that classic profile of Pook would pull in a lot of horselovers who are curious about Lipps! A link to your website and the other pictures ought to finish the job And even if you just do the simple two or three-line want-ad, including the web address would be a winner. It's so easy for people to go "browsing" that way (I know I've even looked up horse properties in South Carolina when a website was listed, and I'm not even in the market!)

Good luck! (Since the Chronicle really caters to the Northeastern crowd, as far as I can tell, a description of your version of "winter" weather ought to be a great sell!)

[identity profile] cindershadow.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
(Could one gift you with at least a little typical want-ad? Once you've done the beta test? Let one know . . . )

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, thanks. That is so nice of you. Let's see how it goes and then see about it.

[identity profile] lynnesite.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"...classic profile of Pook..."

So for your richer attendees, offer an optional imported photographer of note.

Very happy to see this response to your super concepts!

[identity profile] cindershadow.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a great idea! Those photographs are absolutely stunning . . . even considering the fact that it helps to have gorgeous subjects! I drool over them frequently . . .

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I have some ideas in that direction. As, no doubt, do you.

Let's talk. :)

[identity profile] seachanges.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, I was just thinking that I needed a copy of DAGGER & THE CROSS, as mine mysteriously vanished during one of my various moves. I already have (and treasure) ALAMUT in hardcover, so it would be wonderful to have a matched set. Which is a long, rambling way of saying I'd like to get a copy of DAGGER. *g* Any preferred method of payment? I can do paypal, check, or whatever suits your fancy.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
PayPal would be easiest and quickest.

Email with your snail addy and we'll get it in the mail this week. :)

[identity profile] seachanges.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Will do. :)

[identity profile] kateelliott.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
re: the mentorships - if it is of any use, you can use my name as a satisfied (and successful) mentee, as I consider you a mentor.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thank you! That's a great honor.

[identity profile] kateelliott.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no! The honor is mine!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Dueling claims of honor! Bons mots at dawn!

[identity profile] superversive.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be interested in Option A, if it's open to decidedly unhorsy people. (I haven't sat a horse in more than 20 years, and nobody ever had a good word to say about my riding when I did.) Tucson is a bit out of my way, but I can probably justify the trip as a research project. In the circumstances, I would naturally prefer to be a 'boarder'.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Decidedly unhorsey people are the target audience. :)

Research it is, and there's the whole dry-land thing as well, which adds to the ambience.

[identity profile] superversive.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good! I'd like to keep informed, then.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
We can do that.

I just passed on your book offer in my own LJ - I own ALL of those books, even the rare and coveted A WIND IN CAIRO which is one of my own particular favourites, and I KNOW I can recommend them to people wholeheartedly.

You probably don't remember, but I stopped to talk to you while you were having breakfast at World Fantasy Con in Tempe in 2004. And I confess to being a little afraid of horses, else I'd be hanging out for the Lippizan Weekend...

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I remember! How are you doing? Thanks for the linkage!

You know, a Weekend could be tailored for those who are a little afraid of horses....

[identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered a Horse Camp for Dummy Writers? That is, Horse Camp where the object of the exercise is to learn enough about horses that you don't make an idiot of yourself writing pre-modern periods? I couldn't take advantage of a lesson on one of your lovely Lipps because I haven't crossed a saddle since I was 13. But I'd love to get a sense of how horses live, how far they travel, what their opinions on things look like, how you learn from them, ....

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-13 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's Option A.

[identity profile] naominovik.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Here via [livejournal.com profile] sartorias and lusting after the Lipizzan weekend, when I once again have travel time and funds to spare, having just blown a chunk of both.

The one piece of feedback I would offer -- you don't mention insurance, here, and unfortunately that's something that I've found can blow costs wildly out of whack the second you move from casual to commercial. Anyway, that's the one thing I've run into myself that seemed applicable, and thought I would mention it, though likely you already have it covered.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Yes, that's been thought of. The US Equestrian Federation has a million-dollar horse-activities policy for members. I'll be joining ASAP, as the membership year starts on December 1st.

[livejournal.com profile] casacorona had a great suggestion, too: get cheap Troxel helmets in all sizes. Anybody who rides either brings their own or borrows one from the farm.

And I have a release form written according to Arizona law. You should see my boarding contract--draconian isn't the half of it. It's also according to local law.

With all that, we should be covered.
