Succumbing to the Lure of the Blog

I've done it, the thing I swore I would never do: I started a LiveJournal. It's the influence of a friend who is now missing, and her community of friends (late of the much mourned GEnie SFRT) which has gathered to find her; I've been reminded (as so often of late) of how important that community is to me, and how long I've been off doing my own thing. It's a lovely life up here on the mesa, but sometimes it's good to remember there's a big world out there, and good people in it.

So, welcome to my mesa. When I wear one large, floppy, purple-velvet hat, I'm an author with a load of books--search amazon.com books for Judith Tarr and you'll find lots and lots. When I wear another, spiffy, tricorne hat, I'm a breeder and rider of Lipizzan horses aka Dancing White Horses of Vienna aka Fat White Ponies aka Really Weird Space Aliens in Horse Suits.

Also, I am owned and operated by five cats, two dogs, and a very old, very numinous, very mysterious white goat who was on the farm when I bought it. At that time she was ancient. She is still, ten years later, going strong. We think she may be immortal. She is certainly Evil, and she has plenty to say on numerous subjects. She may end up posting here, who knows?

I'm really glad you're here.

I'm sorry this was the precipitating event.

But welcome, anyway.

Welcome

I did the same today too. :-) I too have been off doing my own thing up in the mountains of Southern California. Maybe part of Kath's legacy will be bring all of the ones she left behind closer together...

Give the goat a scritch between the horns for me.

Good heavens, the goat is still with you? Immortal, indeed.

I'm also newly Livejournal-enabled in the wake of the present calamity; when I realized just how many friends and former GEnie-ites were hereabouts (and more active here than on either of the other post-SFRT communities), it seemed like the right thing to do. Mine may be an intermittently updated journal, but we'll see how it goes.

Meanwhile, it really is good to reconnect.

Amen.

I had been told about this--by Sioux, Kath, Ashley, others. No time, I said. Timesink to da max, I said. No way, I said.

I get here to check messages on windrose's lj and my god, it's GEnie!

That was it, it was all over.

It is SO GOOD to see you guys again.

I am glad to see you here, too, though I wish so much that it was under different circumstances. I've revived this LJ as a result of this event.

JAN! Long time no phosphor!

So many people have reappeared because of this. It's a terrible tragedy, but this part of it has been a blessing.

If we manage to create anything good out of this (at least from my perspective), it will be that... people gathering together more.

I have found LJ to be much more like GEnie than any other service, both in ambience and function.

Welcome, all the newcomers and new-returners! If we can take anything good out of recent events, it's the reminder to stay in touch...

I find my livejournal to be a remarkably soothing place, very Genie-like indeed (except for the dire need for a 'read all new' switch for my f-list). And actually less of a timesink than certain mailing lists!

The Friends page isn't too bad, if you keep track of the number of Comments. What do the LiveGods say about installing a ReadAllNew switch?

The LiveGod I spoke to went off into muttering incoherence for a while, then said she's see what could be done. But she was also in the middle of linguistics finals, so that may not have been a fair time to ask her. *evil grin*

Evil is good. We like Evil.

Read All New -would- be nice.

Hi! I decided to succumb as well. . .

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2004-03-29 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, Leah! We miss you in Tucson. How is Laramie?

Judy

[identity profile] lrcutter.livejournal.com 2004-03-29 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hey Judy - Laramie has actually been pretty good. I have a lovely house up on the edge of town--the view out my backdoor is pretty spectacular. I will be back in Tucson for a week in November (the week following WorldFantasy in Phoenix) and was hoping to get together with the Tucson writers, maybe do a dinner, some time that week. . . .

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2004-03-29 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh YES. Definitely. (Note to self: Stop procrastinating. Get that WFC membership.) I'm sure a gathering can be arranged.

You know, I don't think Katherine could have a better memorial than a regathering of the Genie tribe. As others have said, it's a shame it's taken this to bring us back together. But it's good seeing old friends again.

My god, it really is GEnie reborn ... I had no idea.

GEnie Reunion

Hi!! Why, if it isn't *a whole gang* of cool people whose threads I used to read back on GEnie . . . and even though that ended, what, 10 or more years ago, I remember it very well. I knew immediately when I saw the names of the horses that I had stumbled upon Judy Tarr! And I recognize several other people just from their styles. Y'all probably don't remember me, because I mostly just lurked and asked a few questions, but anyhow, welcome to LiveJournal-ing. It's almost like a GEnie SquareTable. (Couldn't be round.) I should be updating my LJ more often. . . .
Have fun out there!

Hi, there! It is very GEnie-like. Feels good.
