I Saw Her!

The shuttle flew right over us! Stupidiot did not realize it was going to fly directly over the Rincons, or that it would be so large or so clear, so I didn't have the camera for the splendid sight of the white bird over the mountain (which I will never forget). But I managed to catch it over the barn roof as it flew slowly toward the city:

And another, more distant shot with the Santa Catalinas in the background:

Damn, screen is blurry. Better go fix it.

Wow. THat is low. SO COOL

[identity profile] princejvstin.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So cool!!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It came directly over the mountain, and looked absolutely huge. I could see every detail of the bird on the carrier. By the time I bolted back out with camera, it had gone most of the way toward the city.

I was expecting it to be so high or little it wouldn't be worth photographing. Just went out to watch it go over, and when it came, OMG. I hope someone got the shot of it over the peak, because it was stunning.

[identity profile] casacorona.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it come over the Rincons from my front porch. A lot farther away than you were, but so impressive and cool!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It was huge coming on. I could see every detail. Mind. Blown.

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome shots!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :)

[identity profile] galeni.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Gorgeous.

That blurry screen virus thing is contagious.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Horrible, isn't it? But I wouldn't have missed it.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
She was gorgeous. And now I've seen Atlantis on the pad, and Iforgetwhich on its way to the pad, and Endeavour on her way out to pasture.

[identity profile] seachanges.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I told you about the time the shuttle flew directly over my house for a night landing at Kennedy Space Center, yes? It was Atlantis, IIRC, and I couldn't see it at all, but the sonic boom shook the whole house.

Right. Sniffly now. Must grab Kleenex.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that. Wow.

[identity profile] green-knight.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's some bird.

You're right. The pics make the screen go blurry.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird how that works.

[identity profile] smoemeth.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap!!

I think that was Challenger going out to the pad that day, if I'm remembering right.

When the Enterprise flew in to NYC this spring to live on the Intrepid, I happened to be driving up the FDR just as it flew over the Triboro Bridge. Stunning. You got the better view, though!!

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I went out to see it, thinking it would be like the usual jet flying over to TIA, and then this Huge. White. THING rolled over the mountain. I had a full side view. It was maybe 6000 feet up.

From the looks of the photos that are being posted, I was at the best possible angle and altitude. Naturally I didn't have the camera. But I do like that I got it over the barn roof. :)

[identity profile] catsittingstill.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm glad you posted these.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. If you check the Tucson news sites, there are more shots, with better lenses.

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect the Rincons being so close actually made it more huge, subjectively at least, for all that we had a nice clear view on the Mall, too.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It was really something. I was looking kind of idlly to see if I would see it, and then ZOMG, it was -here.- Right in front of me.

One of the highlights of my life as a space geek.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-09-20 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so impressed that you saw it. Just amazing.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just hoped to see a little white dot in the sky. What I got was pure wow.

[identity profile] adriannem.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Way, way, way cool!!!!

[identity profile] joncwriter.livejournal.com 2012-09-20 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! They're saying they'll be doing a flyover near the Golden Gate Bridge tomorrow morning, so I'll have a primo spot to see it myself! :D

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Latest is that it's delayed an hour. Don't forget your camera!

There were people on the top level of the parking lot here at work, most of them expecting it to come in from the southeast. So when it popped over the Rincons they all scuttled to the north end to watch it cross the city about a mile north of us -- and then swoop south to pass over the UA Mall.

Yes, I was looking toward White Sands, looking for a little white dot, and holy CRAP, Batman. They sure did stage -that- entrance for maximum effect. It came directly over the peak from my vantage.

[identity profile] mizchalmers.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
This is the one that made my stuff blur up:

https://twitter.com/ShuttleCDRKelly/status/248914060966518784/photo/1

I gather they flew her low over Tucson just for Gabby. Oh, America.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
And for her husband, who was its last commander. He was all stiff upper lip, but one could tell he was a little teary.

[identity profile] mizchalmers.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
"That's my spaceship." Guh.

[identity profile] dancinghorse.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-oh. Screen getting blurry again. Should I be calling Dell Support?

[identity profile] raithen.livejournal.com 2012-09-21 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think maybe the curiosity rover twitter feed may be a better source for help reolving that type of screen blurriness.

Wow! You got an amazing view. That shot with the barn roof is definitely one to treasure.

Wow!
